In front of you, on Quai Louis II, this white building with its stacked decks recalls an ocean liner moored in Port Hercule. It is the headquarters of the Yacht Club de Monaco, inaugurated in June 2014 and designed by the British architect Norman Foster, with interiors by Jacques Grange. Monaco’s sailing history is far older, though. As early as 1862, under Charles III, the Principality held its first regattas. In 1888 Albert I founded the Société des Régates, which launched international races the following year. On 17 June 1953, Prince Rainier III created the Yacht Club de Monaco, with a conviction he summed up at the inauguration: "Our future lies towards the sea". Having no premises at first, the club was hosted by the Société des Bains de Mer, and its trophies were displayed at the Hôtel de Paris. Since 1984 it has been chaired by Prince Albert II. Today the club has 2,500 members of 82 nationalities. It is a private club: admire it from the quay, watching the sailing boats come into the harbour.

History

Monaco’s sailing tradition goes back to the 19th century. In 1862, under the influence of Prince Charles III, the Principality held its first regattas. In 1888 Albert I founded the Société des Régates with 12 Monegasque members, to organise international regattas from 1889. Monaco then became a popular winter resort, which ensured the success of the sport.

In the early 1950s Prince Rainier III, a keen sailor, foresaw the growth of yachting. On 17 June 1953 he founded the Yacht Club de Monaco, an offshoot of the Société des Régates. Having no premises, the club was first hosted by the Société des Bains de Mer in a former pottery on Avenue d’Ostende, while a showcase in the lobby of the Hôtel de Paris displayed its cups. In 1966 it moved to Quai Antoine Ier.

In 1984 Hereditary Prince Albert was appointed president by his father, a role he still holds. In June 2014 the club inaugurated its new headquarters on Quai Louis II.

Art and architecture

The 2014 building is the work of Norman Foster, one of the best-known British architects, and his firm Foster + Partners. Its stacked terraces and horizontal lines recall the decks of a ship facing Port Hercule. The interior design was entrusted to the decorator Jacques Grange.

The club presents this headquarters as an environmentally conscious building, consistent with its commitment to protecting the marine environment. It houses restaurants, members’ areas and a sailing school open to young people from the age of 6.

Anecdotes

At the 1953 inauguration, Rainier III summed up his ambition in a famous phrase: "Our future lies towards the sea". He saw the club as a key element in developing the port and Monaco’s tourism.

In 1995 the club acquired Tuiga, a yacht designed by William Fife in 1909, which became its flagship after restoration. The year before, in 1994, the club had launched Monaco Classic Week, a gathering of classic yachts. The "La Belle Classe" label was created in 2005.

Today the club has 2,500 members of 82 nationalities, united by the motto "One Spirit, one Team, one Club".

What to look for

From the quay, observe the building’s outline and its tiered terraces. Then turn towards Port Hercule: depending on the season, you will see racing yachts, large motor yachts or classic boats. If Tuiga is moored, look for her slender hull and traditional rigging. Finally, look up at the Rock opposite: the Palace and Monaco-Ville overlook the harbour the club has enlivened since 1953.

Practical

The Yacht Club is a private club: the interior is reserved for members and their guests. The building can be viewed freely from Quai Louis II, on the edge of Port Hercule, about 10 minutes’ walk from Place d’Armes or the Casino. For regattas and events, check the club’s official website.

Nearby

Continue along the harbour towards the Rainier III swimming pool and the Grand Prix circuit, or walk up to the Casino. The official website of the Yacht Club de Monaco presents the club’s history, regattas and sailing school.

On site, look for: Count the building’s levels that look like ship decks, then look for a classic wooden-hulled sailing boat moored in the harbour.
