Here you are near Monaco Heliport, at the western end of Fontvieille, facing the sea. Listen: this is the Principality’s only aviation facility. Monaco has no room for an airport, so the helicopter serves as its link with the world. The heliport opened in 1976, during the reign of Prince Rainier III, on about 3 hectares of the platform reclaimed from the sea. At first it had a single landing pad; it has grown since, and some pads jut out over the water. The scheduled shuttle reaches Nice Côte d’Azur Airport in about 7 minutes of flight. To limit noise, arrivals and departures are routed over the sea. The helipads are not open to the public and the terminal is for passengers only, so stay in the public areas around it. From there you will often see a helicopter land or take off, with the Rock and Cap-d’Ail as a backdrop.
History
Monaco is too small for an airport. When the Principality reclaimed the Fontvieille district from the sea from 1966 onwards, part of the new land was set aside for aviation. The heliport opened in 1976, during the reign of Prince Rainier III, on about 3 hectares between the Rock and Cap-d’Ail.
It is Monaco’s only aviation facility. It is run by the Civil Aviation Directorate of the princely government, and security is provided by the maritime and airport police. Its main role is to link the Principality with Nice Côte d’Azur Airport, where many travellers arrive from all over the world. Shuttle buses also connect the heliport with the Principality’s main hotels.
Art and architecture
At first the heliport had only one landing pad. It has grown since, and several pads, including pads A and B, jut out over the sea. The site includes a single terminal, a control tower, 4 hangars (3 on the east side, 1 on the west), an underground car park and a drop off area in front of the terminal. Set on a terrace over the Mediterranean, it neighbours the Princess Grace Rose Garden, Stade Louis II and Fontvieille Harbour.
Anecdotes
The road journey between Nice and Monaco takes time; by helicopter it lasts about 7 minutes. It is the fastest option, and also the most expensive, for travellers arriving in Nice by plane. In 2019 nearly 79,000 passengers used the heliport. To reduce noise, helicopters arrive and leave over the sea, never over the buildings.
For professionals the heliport has its own codes: MCM for IATA and LNMC for ICAO. Nice Airport is only about twenty kilometres away by the coast road or the motorway, but traffic makes the drive much longer than the flight. Several operators run the scheduled link with Nice, and many private flights leave for other destinations.
What to look for
From the public areas around the heliport, watch the helicopters’ ballet: approach over the water, a short pause on the pad, then take off towards the open sea. Spot the control tower and the pads that project over the sea. To the east, the Rock and its ramparts close the horizon. With children, the show is guaranteed: count the aircraft on the pads and bet on which one will take off first.
Practical
The heliport is at the western end of Fontvieille, about twenty minutes on foot from Place d’Armes. Buses serve the "Héliport" stop. To be precise about access: the helipads are never open to the public, and the terminal is intended for passengers who have booked a flight with an operator. Stay on the pavements and public areas, and respect the restricted zones. To book a flight, contact the operators directly.
Nearby
Continue to the nearby Fontvieille Big Top, then the Princess Grace Rose Garden and Fontvieille Harbour. Several operators fly from the heliport, including Monacair, Heli Air Monaco and Heli Sécurité. For flight times and fares, check their websites directly.
On site, look for: Spot the control tower, then watch from which side, sea or land, a helicopter arrives or leaves.
